Raising Resilient Kids in an Age of Anxiety
In The Anxious Generation, the book we gifted to each family at the beginning of the school year, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt sheds light on the troubling rise in anxiety and depression among young people. He points to one major culprit: the shift from real-world, independent play to a childhood dominated by screens and social media. As Christian parents, we have both a challenge and an opportunity to guide our children toward a healthier, more faith-filled upbringing.
Haidt’s research shows that excessive screen time and social media use lead to increased anxiety, loneliness, and decreased resilience. Children today spend less time outside, engage in fewer face-to-face interactions, and are missing the developmental benefits of unstructured, real-world play. Many are also missing the benefits of participating in team sports where focus, discipline, teamwork, and physical fitness all combine to benefit children tremendously, while idle screen time harms them.
As Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, we are called to "train up a child in the way he should go," which means fostering life experiences that build character, faith, and emotional strength.
What can we do? First, set clear boundaries on screen time and prioritize outdoor play, physical activity, and family interaction. Encourage participation in church activities, team sports, and service projects that build a sense of purpose and belonging. Most importantly, model a life centered on Christ rather than digital distractions.
By reclaiming childhood from the grip of screens and reintroducing the joy of real-world engagement, we equip our children with the resilience and faith needed to navigate an increasingly anxious world. The world provides plenty of new challenges to raising children. However, God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His grace is sufficient and He is well able to guide us through every challenge our children will face.
It is our joy to partner with you and your family!
